funny ha ha
The Woolston Blog By daniel on 8/31/2005 4:00 PM

Your wife decides to go out with her friends drinking and dancing.... You're okay with it, because you get to watch sports all night.... You hear her stumble into bed around 4am and you laugh knowing she's going to have a monster hangover....

You wake up the next morning and go outside to the family Volvo, which she used last night.... You sigh in relief because it's all in one piece.... You circle the car looking for dents and find none....

But... Wait a minute.... [Click here for a picture of the car]

DTS FTP Retrieval
The Woolston Blog By daniel on 8/31/2005 4:00 PM

So you wanna use Sql Server 2000 DTS to go out and pull down some files via an Ftp site?
Simple right?  Well what if your vendor is using dated filenames (i.e. 050805.zip)?
not so simple anymore.
i had a really hard time finding information on todays task and i'm passing the solution on to others:

1.  Create your new DTS package.
2.  Drag an FTP Task on the package.
3.  Enter in the Non-changing static information on the first tab (ftp site, username, password and dump location) - Dont select any files on the files Tab.  We'll set those dynamically.
4.  Close the Ftp Task
5.  Drag and ActiveX script Task on to the form.

[Sample Code:]
'********************
'  Visual Basic ActiveX Script
'****************************************
Function Main()
Dim oPkg
' Get current package instance
Set oPkg = DTSGlobalVariables.Parent
' Get existing FTP task by name
' Note, name may need to be changed to match your FTP task
Set oFTPTask = oPkg.Tasks("DTSTask_DTSFTPTask_1").CustomTask
dim fixDate
fixDate = Now()
fixDate = DateAdd("d", -1, fixDate)
dim sFilename
 sFilename = Right(Year(fixDate), 2)
 If Month(fixDate) < 10 Then sFilename = sFilename & "0" & Month(fixDate) Else sFilename = sFilename & Month(fixDate)
 If Day(fixDate) < 10 Then sFilename = sFilename &  "0" & Day(fixDate) Else sFilename = sFilename & Day(fixDate)
 sFilename = sFilename & ".zip"
 ' Set properties of FTP task
 oFTPTask.SourceFilename = "'" & sFilename & "';'dailyupdatefolder';''"
 '  Clean Up
 Set oFTPTask = Nothing
 Set oPkg = Nothing
  Main = DTSTaskExecResult_Success
End Function
[end sample code]

a few notes on the code - the first bolded code (fixDate = DateAdd("d", -1, fixDate))

I set the date back a day, because I'm after yesterdays files.
the second bolded code (;'dailyupdatefolder')  this is the file location on the ftp site that your file is sitting in.

Now setup the Workflow property for your FTP task to run after the ActiveX Script objects successful completion and you're all set.

yet another loss
The Woolston Blog By daniel on 8/29/2005 4:00 PM

In honor of tonites craptastic performance against the Rams, I give you this awesome image of Joey Harrington being hauled down behind the line. Yeah i know its a preseason game. but ya know..they had all their starters out there for a good chunk of the game. and it looked like the same ole lions to me.
lame.

WTF??!!
The Woolston Blog By daniel on 8/27/2005 4:00 PM
holy crap! i've seen everything now. snoop dogg and mr. Iacocca together pushing cars on t.v. chrysler must really be digging deep into the marketing bucket. the only redeeming value i can see to this whole affair is that mr. iacocca is donating his appearance fees to a diabetic charity fund.

foxpro eats butt
The Woolston Blog By daniel on 8/26/2005 4:00 PM
foxpro databases eat butt.
and content vending companies that build tables that violate their own primary keys, should be kicked square in the nads.
this is gonna be a long weekend.
and not in the "this beach is great honey, hand me some more chips" kinda way.
i could put this crap off until monday, but i had to wait so long to get content, that i need to help put us back on schedule.
so i code.
at least the sql2k DTS tool is awesome.

craptastic tech support
The Woolston Blog By daniel on 8/25/2005 4:00 PM

o.k...so i started setting up another DotNetNuke site up on my host.  I've been wanting to put up something for demoing dnn version 3 and thought today would be a good day to do that since i'm waiting on ftp content to download for another hour or so.  so i set up the dnn3 install locally, everything is fine.  i move the sql2k db and asp.net folder over to the host and send in a request to the host to have the permissions set on the folder and setup the db user account as dbo on the dnn3 database.  fine.  no problems.  but then i go into the site to change httpalias and blammo..site craps out.  iis has the old stuff cache and its not releasing it.  so consequently the site never loads...it just keeps compiling.  so i pop back into my hosts tech support page and decide to try out the “Live Chat” application.  Here is a transcript of that excessively long interaction (35 minutes total):

Chat InformationPlease wait for a site operator to respond.
Chat InformationYou are now chatting with 'Nidhi'
Nidhi: Hello. How may I assist you?
daniel: hello nidhi, i just finished setting up bishopsoftware.com as dnn install
daniel: the site isnt loading
daniel: its just compiling forever
daniel: i had to change the portal alias and i think that iis has the old alias cached
daniel: it might be necessary to recycle iis
Nidhi: let me check it first
daniel: o.k. thank you for your help   (note that i'm being excessively nice, hoping for a quick response....)
Nidhi: can give me exact link to browse ?  (note that he's asking for link,  but i just gave it to him earlier...)
daniel: www.bishopsoftware.com
Nidhi: ok
daniel: found the problem?
Nidhi: working on that
Nidhi: please wait
daniel: ok...thanks

(20 minutes pass by....)
daniel: nevermind, i'll reinstall the app

Application Ended

isnt that awesome?!!!
jodohost sucks.  hard.  i'll have to come back to the install issue later.
too busy with work related stuff now.

google talk is out
The Woolston Blog By daniel on 8/23/2005 4:00 PM

google talk is out. i have it. but my contact list is notably absent of contacts. guess i need to add some gmail contacts now. my first "gut reaction" to the application is that its pretty cool. i like that skype-like service is built into the framework. i'll post again later after i've had a chance to see the thing in action.

secondary observations:  ummm.....no send file feature.  not a huge deal but other IM clients have it.
if you have a gmail account and want to add me, my gmail account is danwoolston at gmail dot com

parameter dance
The Woolston Blog By daniel on 8/22/2005 4:00 PM
really wish we would have found this other ajax.net library a while back.
the schwarze one is nice and all...but doing the parameter dance is a little tedious.
page state access would be just wonderful...but hey..you dance with the girl you brought.
i've been giving some thought into building my own library that would encapsulate the best of all libraries out there. we'll see. we're at warp speed on this project, so cutting engines to work on something as tedious as a self-developed library could possibly suck away waking hours that are better spent on delivering a quality product to the customer.
we added two new resources to the project today. if they can hit the ground running, we're gonna be alright. october 17th is getting closer everyday.
i cant even imagine how little sleep we're going to get in September.

massively busy
The Woolston Blog By daniel on 8/18/2005 4:00 PM

things are at full speed at work now.  we've been working from a minimal amount of content provided by the design team and the site is really starting to come together.  a couple more resources will begin on monday and thats gonna help out a ton.  Especially on the store front.  I'm anxious to see what Jim and I will be able to drop into the whole solution.  He has a strong retail background so I'm sure that I'll be able to pick up alot of information from him.

Found out Ryans development secret today and now he's all mad about it.  He was slackin off all day, but yet he still has buttloads of code written.  How's he doin it?  And how can i cash in on the secret?  Then it occurs to me...He's prolly outsourcing his work assignments.  Nick tells him what to build and Ryan forwards that right on to his team.  Ryan probably makes like $65/hour, so it's not a big deal to pay some guy in New Delhi a buck fifty to pop off some code.  Man...wish i would have thought of it first.

dan applemans blog
The Woolston Blog By daniel on 8/14/2005 4:00 PM

One of the blogs that I frequent is Dan Applemans.  I've read a few of his books and he always has something interesting to say on his site.  Tonite i was browsing the web at Paneras and their filter caught his site as being “Cult/Occult”.  I thought that was pretty darned funny.  Now i understand why we all buy his books.  Its cause Mr. Appleman has brainwashed us with his cultish ways.

dnn v3
The Woolston Blog By daniel on 8/13/2005 4:00 PM
a friend of mine asked why i haven't upgraded this site to dnn 3. simple. i have a huge collection of dnn 2 modules that were free. most dnn3 modules are retailed now. so no thanks. if it ain't broke don't fix it.
maybe when i change hosts i'll look into it. but not any time soon.
dnn 3 is cool though and worth installing. too bad nobody's really interested in putting out free content for it.
